About the Artists

Kalman Oswald 1888-1975 was born in Erzi Hungary and died in Monterey Massachusetts. Oswald was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. He showed in the Salons of America 1932 and 1934. His work ranges from Berkshire landscapes, to colorful still life’s and beautifully rendered fine portraits; especially of his wife Helmi.

Sam Lewis Rand (born Sam Goldberg) 1910-1997 is our other predominant artist. Rand taught art in New York’s Harlem and painted in casein and watercolor. Rand has been involved in the art scene in all it’s facets. He was a member of the Monument Fine Arts and Archives Section of Supreme Headquarters US Army involved in the preservation and collection of looted art collections during World War II. Founder and proprietor of the “Art Place”, his gallery showed paintings by nationally known artists resident in the Berkshires. Rand also introduced the first showings of Black Tribal Arts, being a predominant collector of same. Rand’s interest in developing regional art led to his chairmanship of the Southern Berkshire Arts Council for several years. He was a member of the Massachusetts Council for the Arts and Humanities helping allocate funding for local art institutions. Rand’s activities in the musical scene involved him in the Stockbridge Chamber Concerts and the Boston Symphony concerts at Tanglewood. Resident of Berkshire County for 40 years with his home in Great Barrington his art reflects his interest and observation in the Berkshire environment. Sam Lewis Rand has exhibited extensively in the Berkshires, New York City and Albany.

Fuji Nakamizo 1889-1950 born in Fukuiken, Japan. This Japanese-American artist specialized as a Painter, Etcher and Lithographer. He was active in Branchville and Old Lyme Connecticut, as well as, New York City.
